Family Law
Family and relationship matters, sensitively handled
Finances
Relationship breakdown raises many practical issues as well. Clients may be worried about where they are going to live and how they are going to be able to pay the bills. There may be other assets to divide up or concerns about pension provision and claims that may be made against pension schemes. Occasionally, there may be family businesses that need to be considered. We are able to provide clear, succinct and specialist advice about all these issues and recommend a way forward.
Cohabitation
Many people now live together without marrying and this involves quite separate legal considerations both in relation to financial matters and in relation to children. Again, we have the expertise to guide you.
Civil Partnerships
Couples of the same sex may now form registered civil partnerships, a new legal status for couples created by the Civil Partnership Act 2004. As with marriage, if a relationship breaks down, there are special provisions which deal with the dissolution of a civil partnership. We can provide specialist help with the formation of a civil partnership and also its dissolution, including financial implications.
Mediation
Over the last few years mediation has become an increasingly more common method of resolving issues following separation. Mediation involves both parties in working out financial issues and/or arrangements for children of the family with mediators who work with the couple to achieve their objectives in a safe and constructive environment.
The breakdown of a relationship can be a difficult time. We provide a professional, confidential and caring service that will assist you through the process. We see our primary aim as delivering a service that identifies your wishes and then provides a practical solution.
Divorce and separation
We provide you with the necessary information and advice to enable you to decide whether you want to proceed with a divorce and what your
other options may be. This covers information about the process, timescales and cost.
Occasionally there are urgent concerns about personal safety or arrangements for the children. We have specialist expertise in emergency court injunctions and are able to respond to those concerns swiftly and efficiently.
Children
It is not always possible for parents to agree on the best arrangements for the children in the event of separation or divorce. We recognise that these issues can be distressing and emotional and we aim to provide advice that it is realistic and sensitive.
We will explain the court’s powers and how they are likely to be exercised in your case. There are often other ways of resolving these differences, such as mediation and we can provide you with information about these services.
“I would just like to thank you for all your kind and professional help through a very difficult time which I thankfully now put well behind me!” Mrs B.
